Is bamboo fiber fabric prone to pilling? Which fabrics are not easy to pill?

Bamboo fiber itself is a natural cellulose fiber with fine monofilament fineness, and the cohesion between fibers is relatively weak. During wearing or use, when subjected to friction, fibers are easily pulled out from the fabric surface, forming fuzz, which then tangles into pills.

 

If the spinning process of bamboo fiber fabric is poor, with fibers not arranged tightly enough, or the fabric has a low weaving density, the pilling phenomenon will be exacerbated. However, bamboo fiber fabrics that have undergone special treatment will have improved pilling issues. Pure bamboo fiber fabrics tend to pill more noticeably; when blended with fibers like cotton or polyester, the degree of pilling varies depending on the blending ratio. For example, when blended with polyester, although the strength increases, polyester fibers themselves are not easily broken, which may make the pills harder to fall off, resulting in a more severe pilling appearance.

 

The following types of fabrics are generally not prone to pilling:

 

Natural fibers

 

Cotton: Cotton fabrics with high counts (e.g., above 60 counts) and high density have tightly bonded fibers, so fibers are not easily loosened during friction, leading to less pilling. However, low-count cotton fabrics are relatively prone to pilling.

 

Linen: Linen fibers are strong, tough, coarse, and rigid. They are not easily worn and broken to form fuzz during wearing, so linen fabrics (such as linen and ramie fabrics) are usually not prone to pilling.

 

Chemical fibers

 

Polyester: Ordinary polyester fabrics are prone to pilling, but those treated with anti-pilling processes have significantly reduced pilling tendency. Additionally, when polyester is blended with other fibers in an appropriate ratio, pilling can also be reduced.

 

Nylon: Nylon fibers have excellent wear resistance and high strength, making them not easily broken. Therefore, fabrics made of nylon, especially those used in outdoor and sportswear, have less pilling.

 

Blended fabrics: A reasonable blending ratio and process can improve the pilling resistance of fabrics. For example, cotton blended with a small amount of polyester can retain the comfort of cotton while reducing pilling with the help of polyester's strength; wool blended with nylon can reduce the pilling tendency of pure wool fabrics.
