What’s the Difference Between Cotton and 32S Combed Cotton?
Mar 10, 2026
Cotton and 32S combed cotton are often mentioned in textiles. Simply put, 32S combed cotton is an upgraded version of regular cotton. They differ mainly in production, quality and performance.
1. Basic Definition
Cotton is made from 100% natural cotton fiber, with no chemical additives. It uses ordinary short-staple cotton, and the production process is simple.
32S Combed Cotton combines special craft and yarn count.
"32S" means the fineness of the yarn.
"Combed" refers to an extra filtering process that removes short fibers and impurities.
2. Production Difference
Regular cotton uses basic carding process, which leaves more impurities and short fibers. The surface is rough and easy to have cotton knots.
32S combed cotton adds a combing process, removing about 15% of short fibers. This makes the yarn smoother and stronger, but also raises the cost by 20%–50%.
3. Performance Difference
- Regular cotton
Good breathability and low cost, but easy to pill, shrink and deform after washing.
- 32S combed cotton
Smooth and delicate touch, stable size, low shrinkage, resistant to pilling, and more durable after repeated washing.
4. Suitable Uses
- Regular cotton: jackets, casual pants, basic T‑shirts
- 32S combed cotton: underwear, high‑grade T‑shirts, bedding, kids' wear, sensitive skin products
5. Simple Ways to Distinguish
- Look through the fabric: 32S combed cotton is dense and does not show hand shadows clearly.
- Touch: Combed cotton feels silky smooth; regular cotton feels slightly rough.
In short, 32S combed cotton offers higher quality and durability, while regular cotton is more cost-effective. You can choose according to your needs and budget.
