1. The "Hydrogen Bond" Problem: How Cotton's Molecules Lock in Wrinkles
At the heart of cotton's wrinkling issue is its main component: cellulose, a natural polymer made of long, chain-like molecules. These cellulose molecules are held together by weak chemical links called hydrogen bonds-and these bonds are the key to understanding creases.
Under normal conditions, hydrogen bonds keep cellulose molecules aligned in a relatively neat, stable structure, giving cotton its smooth, flat appearance. But when cotton comes into contact with water (like during washing, sweating, or even high humidity) or faces physical force (like twisting, folding, or stretching), these hydrogen bonds break easily. When they break, the cellulose chains slip out of their original alignment-twisting, shifting, or bunching up.
