Viscose fiber, a widely used man-made cellulose fiber, is celebrated for its natural origins and versatile properties. Derived from plant-based cellulose (typically wood pulp, bamboo, or cotton linters), it undergoes chemical processing to transform raw cellulose into spinnable fibers-hence classified as a regenerated cellulose fiber. Its name stems from the "viscose" solution (a thick, honey-like orange liquid) formed during production, created by dissolving cellulose in sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide before extrusion into an acid bath to solidify into filaments.

 

Key Advantages

Viscose fiber boasts a texture remarkably similar to natural cotton or silk, often with a smoother, more luxurious touch. This makes it ideal for garments and textiles requiring a gentle, skin-friendly feel, such as blouses, dresses, and bed linens.

This is viscose's most significant drawback: its strength drops drastically when wet, retaining only 40–60% of its dry strength. This makes it prone to stretching or tearing during washing, requiring gentle handling (avoid vigorous wringing or high-tension machine cycles).

 

2.Poor Elasticity and Wrinkle Resistance
The fiber has limited stretch recovery, meaning fabrics easily wrinkle and struggle to regain their shape after folding or wear. This often necessitates ironing to maintain a neat appearance.

 

3.Dimensional Instability
Viscose fabrics tend to shrink more than synthetic fibers, especially after the first wash. Pre-shrinking treatments are often required to minimize this issue.

 

4.Moderate Durability
Its abrasion resistance is lower than synthetic fibers like polyester or nylon, making viscose less suitable for high-wear items (e.g., heavy-duty workwear or frequent-use upholstery) without blending with stronger fibers.

 

Practical Applications

Despite its limitations, viscose is widely used in:

 

  • Apparel: Blouses, dresses, lingerie, and lightweight knitwear.
  • Home textiles: Bed sheets, curtains, and decorative fabrics.
  • Blended fabrics: Often mixed with polyester or spandex to improve durability and elasticity.
