What is POY?

Jul 17, 2025

POY stands for Pre-Oriented Yarn-a semi-finished intermediate product in the production of synthetic fibers (primarily polyester and nylon). It is a partially oriented filament that requires further processing before use in textile manufacturing.

Core Production Process

POY is created through melt spinning:

  • Polymer raw materials (e.g., polyester chips) are melted and extruded through spinnerets to form filaments.
  • The filaments are rapidly cooled and then wound at high speeds (typically 3,000–3,500 meters per minute). This high-speed winding partially orients the polymer molecular chains (aligning them in the direction of the fiber) but results in low crystallinity.

Key Characteristics

1.Semi-Oriented Structure

  • The molecular chains are only partially aligned (not fully stretched), giving POY low tensile strength but high elongation (it can stretch significantly under force).
  • Its structure is relatively loose compared to fully processed fibers, with a smooth surface.

2.Intermediate Product Nature

  • POY is not directly usable for weaving or knitting. It requires post-processing to enhance performance:

1)Drawing Texturing: Converted into DTY (Draw Textured Yarn) via stretching and texturing, which improves elasticity, bulk, and strength.

2)Full Drawing: Transformed into FDY (Fully Drawn Yarn) through complete stretching, resulting in higher strength, lower elongation, and a smoother, more lustrous finish.

3.Versatility in Applications

  • As a foundational material, POY's properties (e.g., elongation, processability) make it adaptable to various end products. After conversion to DTY or FDY, it is used in apparel, home textiles, and industrial fabrics-depending on the desired characteristics (elasticity, luster, durability).

In summary, POY serves as a critical intermediate in synthetic fiber production, acting as a "blank canvas" that is refined through further processing to meet the specific performance needs of final textile products.
