How to Remove Pilling from Sweaters Without Damaging the Fabric
Mar 18, 2026
Pilling is a common issue with sweaters, especially those made of wool and blended yarns. It occurs when fibers tangle and form small balls due to friction, and is generally not a quality defect. Improper handling can easily damage the fabric structure and shorten the life of your sweater. Using safe, effective methods can remove pilling while protecting texture and quality.
Choose the Right Method Based on Fabric Type
- Fine wool & merino wool: Soft fibers require gentle tools; sharp devices are not recommended.
- Polyester blends: Stronger fiber structure allows more flexible tool options.
The electric fabric shaver is the most popular and safe choice for most sweaters.
Set it to low or medium speed, hold it 1–2 cm above the surface, and move gently with the grain. Avoid tight areas like collars and cuffs to prevent snags or thinning.
For thin wool sweaters, a soft bristle brush is ideal. Brush lightly in the same direction as the knit to remove pills and smooth fibers, reducing further damage.
Manual Removal for Delicate Sweaters
- Sticky lint roller or tape: Safely lifts small pills without harming the fabric, perfect for silk blends and delicate knits.
- Small scissors: For larger pills, carefully trim only the pill itself at the base, being careful not to cut the yarns.
Prevention Helps Reduce Pilling Long-Term
- Turn sweaters inside out before washing, use a laundry bag, and choose cold water on a gentle cycle.
- Avoid washing with rough fabrics such as denim or heavy outerwear.
- Use mild detergent and avoid high-temperature soaking.
- Steam gently after drying to smooth fibers and reshape the sweater.
- Store separately to avoid unnecessary friction.
With proper care and gentle treatment, you can keep sweaters smooth and extend their usable life significantly.
