Which fabrics have almost no static electricity?

Whether a fabric is prone to generating static electricity mainly depends on its hygroscopicity. Fabrics with good hygroscopicity can absorb moisture from the air, reducing charge accumulation, thus hardly generating static electricity; conversely, fabrics with poor hygroscopicity tend to accumulate static electricity. The following types of fabrics have almost no static electricity or only slight static electricity phenomena.

 

1. Natural fiber fabrics

Natural fibers themselves have strong hygroscopicity and can conduct electric charges through moisture, reducing static accumulation. They are the first choice for "anti-static" purposes, such as cotton, linen, and silk.

 

2. Regenerated cellulose fiber fabrics

Made from natural plant raw materials (such as wood and bamboo) through chemical treatment, these fabrics have good hygroscopicity and little static electricity. Examples include viscose fiber, Modal, and Tencel.

 

Features: Smooth and drapable, with better wrinkle resistance than viscose, suitable for high-end clothing (such as shirts and dresses).

 

3. Synthetic fibers with special processing

Fibers like polyester and nylon inherently have poor hygroscopicity and are prone to static electricity, but this can be improved through the following processes:

 

  • Treatment with anti-static additives.
  • Blending with natural fibers: For example, "cotton-polyester blends" utilize cotton's hygroscopicity to reduce static electricity, suitable for scenarios requiring wrinkle resistance and low static electricity.
  • Island-in-the-sea fibers and microfibers: By changing the fiber structure to enhance hygroscopicity, they have less static electricity than ordinary synthetic fibers, but still less than natural fibers.

 

In general, avoid pure synthetic fibers such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic, unless they have undergone special anti-static treatment and have a low blending ratio.
